Pretty weird how she doesn't get the respect she deserves?
From Wiki:

"Before the advent of the Open era of tennis competitions in April
1968, only amateurs were allowed to compete in established tournaments,
including the four Majors. There was no prize money and players were
compensated for travel expenses only. However many top tennis players
turned professional to play legally for prize money in the years before
the open era. They played in separate professional events, mostly on
tours involving head-to-head competition, but also in professional
tournaments as the biggest events on the pro tour. Professional
tournaments, in particular the professional Majors, usually only had a
men's draw."

So why would anyone think Serena has to match or beat Court's 24
Slam count, to be considered THE GOAT, if 13 of Court's Slams
were between amateurs only, and not professional tennis players? And
with NO PRIZE MONEY, and only NON-Professionals, how can anyone think
that pre-1968 Slam events attracted the best tennis talent of the time?

Sorry, RST racists! A Black woman named Serena Williams is the
GOAT! She has a record 18 years between first and last Slam titles!

You say that, but according to Wiki:

Maria Bueno 'turned pro: 1950'
Billie Jean King 'turned pro: 1959'
Margaret Court 'turned pro: 1960'

Suzanne Lenglen 'turned pro: 1926'

Lenglen played on a US professional tour in 1926/27. However, only US
player Mary Browne joined her. Both lost their amateur status. Lenglen
earned $100k from the tour, which lasted 4 months and included dates
in Canada as well as the US.

<http://www.tennisserver.com/lines/lines_99_10_31.html>

In July 1927 Lenglen played a 7-stop UK tour, with Dora Koring & Evelyn
Dewhurst.

In 1941 Alice Marble played on a tour which also featured Mary Hardwick.

Pauline Betz turned pro in 1947 and Althea Gibson did so in 1958. Betz
played against Sarah Palfrey Cooke (1947), and against 'Gorgeous' Gussie
Moran (1950/51). Gibson played Karol Fageras in a series of warm-up
matches for the Harlem Globetrotters (Gibson won 114-4).

Wait a minute, something is wrong on Wiki:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Court

So that claims Court turn Pro in 1960.

But another Wiki article states: "Before the advent of the Open era of
tennis competitions in April 1968, only amateurs were allowed to compete
in established tournaments, including the four Majors. There was no
prize money and players were compensated for travel expenses only."

So was Court a pro, or an amateur, from 1960-1968?

How could she have competed in all those Slams, as a pro?

erase her from the books too!

There were NO women professional players before the advent of the
open era, so Margaret Court played against the best female players in
the world at that time, so your posts about this are spurious!
Maria Bueno       'turned pro: 1950'
Billie Jean King  'turned pro: 1959'
Margaret Court    'turned pro: 1960'
Suzanne Lenglen   'turned pro: 1926'
Lenglen played on a US professional tour in 1926/27. However, only US
player Mary Browne joined her. Both lost their amateur status. Lenglen
earned $100k from the tour, which lasted 4 months and included dates
in Canada as well as the US.
     <http://www.tennisserver.com/lines/lines_99_10_31.html>
Betz
played against Sarah Palfrey Cooke (1947), and against 'Gorgeous'
Gussie Moran (1950/51). Gibson played Karol Fageras in a series of
warm-up matches for the Harlem Globetrotters (Gibson won 114-4).
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Court
So that claims Court turn Pro in 1960.
But another Wiki article states: "Before the advent of the Open era of
tennis competitions in April 1968, only amateurs were allowed to compete
in established tournaments, including the four Majors. There was no
prize money and players were compensated for travel expenses only."
So was Court a pro, or an amateur, from 1960-1968?
How could she have competed in all those Slams, as a pro?
Because she was a 'shamateur' maybe?

   <https://tennisario.com/tennis-open-era/>
From: https://tennisario.com/tennis-open-era/

"Before tennis open era creation:
Back then, the sport was divided. Amateurs and professionals competed
for contrasted rewards. The professionals were denied access to the
Grand Slams.

It was a rule that starved the four majors of the world’s finest players
alike Ken Rosewall, Rod Laver, and Virginia Wade and much more others.

The amateurs however weren’t exactly playing for pride alone. ” It’s not
fair to call amateur tennis in the 60s, amateur tennis. I called it
SHAMATEUR tennis because it was a total SHAM that we were getting paid
under the table. It wasn’t a lot of fun” Billie Jean King explains.

With the sport so fragmented, it’s popularity was suffering. After, it
came the idea to unify the amateurs and the professionals.

After tennis open era creation
On 22 April 1968, the open era was ushered in at WEST HANTS TENNIS CLUB
in Bournemouth with heavy expectations. And by a service from the
Scottish John Clifton, the open era has already started.

After this significant change, a new era in tennis has been launched.
Now, the players could play tennis for a living, and increase the
quality of the play while also play the most historical and important
tournaments.

Also, players could win prize money from the Grand Slam tournaments.
Prior to the open era, the Grand Slams did not guarantee any money to
players."

So pre-Open Era, the Slams didn't have any prize money, and
the professional tours often only had a Men's draw. It
sounds like the Slams back in those days had weak, amateur clowns
playing in them!

Serena is the GOAT female tennis player.

"It just so happened that Karsten Braasch of Germany, ranked 203rd, was
in ear shot. He thought it would be fun so stepped up to say he’d be
happy to take them on.

The date was set and the day arrived. Braasch played a warmup round of
golf in the morning, then came to Melbourne Park. The threesome went out
to a back court where each sister would have a one-set shot at Braasch.
Word had spread around the grounds that the event was taking place,
which caused tournament officials to restrict admittance to the area to
only those with badges.

Braasch would smoke cigarettes and sip beer during the changeovers, and
to be honest no longer looked the part of a fit professional athlete. It
made no matter. Braasch led 5-0 over Serena before winning the set 6-1,
and then posted a 6-2 set victory over Venus."

tours involving head-to-head competition, but also in professional

So why would anyone think Serena has to match or beat Court's 24
Slam count, to be considered THE GOAT, if 13 of Court's Slams
were between amateurs only, and not professional tennis players? And
with NO PRIZE MONEY, and only NON-Professionals, how can anyone think
that pre-1968 Slam events attracted the best tennis talent of the time?
Sorry, RST racists!  A Black woman named Serena Williams is the
GOAT!  She has a record 18 years between first and last Slam titles!
    :O
All the best women players in the world played the slams before 1968 eg
Billie Jean King, Maria Bueno, Virginia Wade, Althea Gibson, Maureen
Connolly etc . There were no pro women players. You're the only one
questioning why Serena is chasing 24. Ask Serena why : )

Not just me, plenty of sites list Open Era only Slam wins, which
gives Court only 11 Slam titles.

If there were no pro women players, then how did they make money

I don't need to sell it, it's already accepted by many!

From Forbes:

"ESPN’s John McEnroe and Evert are among those to call Williams
the GOAT.

“I think Serena is one of the all-time greatest athletes, period,”
McEnroe said in 2015. “Man or woman. She's the greatest female player
I've ever seen. She's proven it to me over and over."

Evert has said the same, albeit hedging a bit.

“Of course Serena is the best ever," she said in 2018. "A case can be
made, but it's really ridiculous. We were the best in our era. Serena is
the best in her era.”"

Imo Connolly or Moody are prob the goats.
The GOATS playing with wooden rackets, with NO PRIZE MONEY,
and often no draws for women? Unlikely.

Nevertheless, I must admit for Connolly to win SIX Slams in
a row, is an incredible achievement, even if she was in an
amateur clown era!

Too bad she died of cancer at the tender age of 34.

Court also won 6 slams in a row completing CYGS in the process, just as Connolly.

Court did it even "later" than Connoly so far more relevant, no?

     :(
She won the last 9 slams she entered & career ended at age 19 when truck
hit her horse causing career ending injury. She would have won several
calendar slams & have 30+ overall imo.

LOL, same two who defended Serena's 2018 USO tantrums to suck up to woke folk. Evert especially is an embarrassment, like a PR rep for the Williams family, openly rooting for Serena and wishing for her opponents' collapse. Seriously, come back when you have some legit analysts.

LOL, that's such a lame response. Hey, look here--Navratilova says, "Serena Williams’ GOAT Status Is Up For Debate." And Martina has won more than either McEnroe or Evert, so how can she be wrong? Eeek!

https://www.forbes.com/sites/adamzagoria/2020/08/24/serena-williams-goat-status-is-up-for-debate-says-martina-navratilova/?sh=6fa8e0ae3c66

Fact is, we've seen former champions all over the board in their opinions evaluating the same players in relative greatness. Sometimes they even vacillate in their OWN assessments from month to month depending on how the wind is blowing. McEnroe and Evert are notorious for this kind of thing.

Adding the "social consciousness" factor into to the mix, one should take their on-the-record opinions with a boulder-sized grain of salt.

Ignorants...

"Aside from Laver, Graf and Court, Serena is the only player to hold all four Grand Slam singles titles on multiple occasions."

Don't they realize that anyone who wins 5 in a row, or more, has already held all four grand slam titles on multiple occasions?

System of CYGS ratings:

1. Laver, 6 pts
2. Budge, 5 pts
3. Djokovic, 1 pt

1. Connolly/Court/Graf, 5 pts
2. Navratilova, 3 pts
3. Serena, 2 pts

They praise her, while in fact she's almost at the bottom of this prestigious list?

Peak Serena would destroy peak Court. In an effort to discredit
Serena, people are desperately looking into the stone ages of tennis,
when they played with wooden rackets, and had ZERO PRIZE MONEY FOR
SLAMS, and in which many tournaments only had men's draws.

How can a tournament attract the best tennis talent, if they

If no one got paid for their Slam wins, then how could they

Pre-Open Era, tennis was disorganized, with no prize money,
and with weak amateur clowns. Court only has 11 Slams after 1968:

You don't seem to understand the world was very different 50 yrs ago.
Amateur tennis was considered the pinnacle as you were playing for
mastery of the sport, your country, to qualify for Davis Cup which is
highest honor etc, not a dodgy pro (think Bobby Riggs type) who 'goes
through the motions' simply because it's a job & for the money. The
best players were in the amateurs & only jumped ship to the pros after
they have proven their worth & to maximize income.

Modern top pros earn more by playing in ATP 500s than even in slams, arguably.

Those ATP 500s are not mandatory, and the appearance fees are in millions.

I don't need to sell it, it's already accepted by many!
LOL, same two who defended Serena's 2018 USO tantrums to suck up to
woke folk. Evert especially is an embarrassment, like a PR rep for the
Williams family, openly rooting for Serena and wishing for her
opponents' collapse. Seriously, come back when you have some legit
analysts.
That's the opinions of two of the greatest players who ever played
tennis.  They know the game better than anyone else.  If that's not
"legit" enough for you, then you need help!
    :/
You must be very young to be so naive, or very new to the game?

Emerson is the perfect argument why slams from his era aren't
comparable. Besides, nobody knew who he was. Sampras invented the slam
chase and just dug somebody up from the history books to make people
think there was a chase going on.

I think the undisputed goat is the one holding all of these 4 golden categories simultaneously and we won't see that anytime soon:

• 7543 king (Federer)
• slam king (Federer/Nadal)
• YE№1 king (Gonzales)
• CYGS king (Laver)

The other categories which also propel you to tier 1, but do not necessarily make you goat are:

• Wim, USO, FO, AO records
• CGS record
• holding all 4 slams

Additionally for the purpose of tiebreakers we might consider:

• most titles
• most weeks at #1
• doubles career

Undisputed goat would be something like 5 calendar slams and maybe close
to perfect 100% match winning rate over many yrs. That's probably
impossible as players don't really raise their level in a vacuum, need
to be pushed by other greats incrementally raising the bar, which means
losses along the way with periods of dominance. Fed/Rafa/Djoker would
prob all be lesser players if they weren't around to push each other.
Evert & MN had that dynamic going on. That's why I feel Sampras would
have been better still with these 3 on the scene as they'd force him to
keep raising his game rather than just cruising '1 break per set' mode
because he could get away with it.

When you listen to Sampras, Fed, Rafa, Djoker talk they usually say 'who
knows who goat is, just happy to be mentioned in same group'. In fact
most past greats make similar comments. They know arguments go back and
forth for decades & are aware of the different conditions across eras,
so happy to have people include them & argue their case. When I think
of goats/boats these are the guys that come to mind;

Tilden, Pancho, Budge, Hoad, Rosewall, Laver, Borg, McEnroe, Sampras,
Federer, Nadal, Djokovic.

Maybe stretch it a little to include Connors, Lendl & Emerson, but these
guys prob a rung short of being the best at their best.

There is always a ceibs bias in analysis, but pretty soon Fed/Rafa/Djoke
will pass into history like the other guys.

Who do you pick to play for your life? Hard to say. You could make a
case for any of these guys at respective peaks. I guess that's why they
are all happy to just be good enough to be in the conversation : )

For me the most unbeatable & unbelievable record is Nadal at FO.
Winning 13 FO easily (never pushed to 5 sets in finals, & only twice in
any round), while thoroughly dominating 2 tier 1 goats at FO is off the
charts. If you had to pick 1 guy to play for you and you could choose
any slam, then has to be Rafa at FO. Laver & Nadal prob stand out as
the top 2 goat level achievements. There is a chance Laver record will
be matched 1 day & someone may win 2 calendar slams again (just need a
brilliant player firing for a few yrs with no clear rivals), but Nadal
FO record is the safest record in any spo

Then he had to invent who he chased, no? It's airtight. It's a fake chase.-- "Cough cough"-- Suzanne Lenglen
There's nothing fake about it.

He won more Wimbledon and USO than anyone in history before him, which was "the real thing" anyway, but and wanted also to get an all-time slam record for a good measure.

Sadly he had no one to push him and he miscalculated a bit or perhaps it was the pundits who miscalculated by claiming his 14 slams would stay as record forever.

Great players easily win 5+ titles at a slam. E.g. those are numbers he himself achieved at Wim/USO. But there are 4 slams, no? Simple math says 20+ is an expected outcome for truly great players with long careers.

You could even say Sampras wasn't playing in fully modern era. 1990s clay was too different from the rest of the tour and AO was only emerging as fully equal slam.

He's basically at up to 95% of Federer's achievements at Wim/USO/YEC/YE№1 despite playing 7 fewer years.

(I'm not counting 2020 and 2021 for Federer).

Good luck selling that idea : )
I don't need to sell it, it's already accepted by many!
LOL, same two who defended Serena's 2018 USO tantrums to suck up to
woke folk. Evert especially is an embarrassment, like a PR rep for
the Williams family, openly rooting for Serena and wishing for her
opponents' collapse. Seriously, come back when you have some legit

Garwin doesn't reply to me cos I called him racist a while ago and that upset him, but keep on asking:
if Serena is GOAT and would thrash everyone "at peak", why when she was "at peak" didn't she get anywhere near a Golden Slam? somebody ALWAYS beat her even though she was somehow unbeatable?

It could be that your writing has become increasingly erratic and
incoherent in recent years. You belly laugh at the same dumb jokes
you've told daily for the last 3 weeks straight, each time as though it
was the first. Because of this whenever I read your posts I get the
distinct impression I'm watching some poor chav's slow-motion descent
into hardcore drugs and booze.

I'd probably feel sorry for you but then I remember on the rare occasion
you're actually clean or sober you're nothing more than a mean-spirited
little cunt. A nasty little shit whose main accomplishment in this
newsgroup (and likely life itself) has been driving decent folks like
Sakari away with relentless bullying, badgering and harassment. Frankly
the day you leave this newsgroup will be a day to celebrate, let's hope
you do it soon!

Other than that you're an alright guy I guess, I don't know why Garvin

If you get "chased away" from here, it speaks more about you.

Just stand up for yourself if you have anything to say. I guess if you don't have anything to say you'd be more likely to leave.

I haven't followed their feud, I never disliked Sakari but then again, I never liked him either. But I don't trust people who feel Clijsters is hotter than Hingis. Maybe if he had said cuter I could go along with that?

Anyway, yeah, I'm not sure what happened between the two, but I believe iceberg was lecturing him on something and Sakari couldn't take it, too much pride?

sadly jd's really bitter and upset cos I keep exposing his thicko wrong politics and voting! he can't justify or answer my questions about war-monger Biden or about defunding of police in Alaska and as he can't answer he just gets more and more angry and then EXPLODES like above!

well Sakari was a total soy boy and am no fan of Kim Klijsters, but that was all fine!! :D it was the git trying to pretend he was a "long-time" Djoker fan just to be cool/woke, when he 100% wasn't! journo-types often try this kind of rubbish and so they need maximum exposing! just like Bad News Brian denying being a Hillary Fan, after posting 100's of pro-Hillary threads. Joe Ramirez even had to admit Sakari lied just like how Gracchus pointed out to Brian he was definitely a Hillary fan! :D
Whisper said it best "Sakari is welcome to come back maybe once his tennis knowledge gets a bit better".

P.S.yes, Patrick used to try denying being a 100% Fed-biased poster too until the day he exploded and said "FEDERER IS TENNIS!" but at least he always was/is a good guy and funny with it!

Meanwhile the best thing Icey can remember was when he used the broken

He probably didn't want his public persona intermingled with some dumb
Brit with a big red nose and a nice checkerboard of teeth in his mouth.
A guy who crawls out of the gutter long enough each day to drain his
failing bladder and sneak into the last remaining internet cafe in

I haven't followed their feud, I never disliked Sakari but then again,
I never liked him either. But I don't trust people who feel Clijsters

Did he really say "hotter"? Somehow that doesn't sound like anything
Sakari would say. I could have sworn he clarified his position on her
attractiveness and it was hardly as clear as you've portrayed it.

Paraphrasing here, what I remember him saying was that he didn't exactly
think Clijsters was objectively extremely physically attractive but that
she had certain intangible, magnetic quality that he couldn't ignore.

That being said Clijsters definitely comes across as a much more genuine
and happy person than Henin to me. Conversely, Henin seems very
introverted and calculating, almost to the point of neurosis. If their
public face is an accurate reflection of their private lives I'd
definitely say Clijsters is more attractive than Henin.

I see Clijsters just got a wildcard for a couple US tournaments. Let's
hope Sakari posts a little bit about it :)
Anyway, yeah, I'm not sure what happened between the two, but I
believe iceberg was lecturing him on something and Sakari couldn't
take it, too much pride?

She has an impressive record:

Almost a calendar-year Grand Slam in 1997! That
must have been an incredible year for her.

But then she loses 5 Slam Finals in a row....that's

I think he writes about sport/tennis for a living & came here to get
some insights because his knowledge wasn't very good. I kept telling
him how superior Henin was in every conceivable way & he just didn't get
it. I couldn't believe his ignorance. He got jaded after Henin just kept
beating her & piling up slams, accused me & others of trolling &
probably got some kind of depression. I think he just lurked after that
to pick up some interesting tennis ideas for his job, but figured no
point posting as he realized he really didn't understand the game that
well. I respect him for that.

likely life itself) has been driving decent folks likeSakari away with
relentless bullying, badgering and harassment. Franklythe day you
leave this newsgroup will be a day to celebrate, let's hopeyou do it
soon!Other than that you're an alright guy I guess, I don't know why
Garvinwould be ignoring you.
If you get "chased away" from here, it speaks more about you.
Just stand up for yourself if you have anything to say. I guess if you
don't have anything to say you'd be more likely to leave.
He probably didn't want his public persona intermingled with some dumb
Brit with a big red nose and a nice checkerboard of teeth in his mouth.
A guy who crawls out of the gutter long enough each day to drain his
failing bladder and sneak into the last remaining internet cafe in
london to post on rst. Can't say I blame him.
I haven't followed their feud, I never disliked Sakari but then again,
I never liked him either. But I don't trust people who feel Clijsters
is hotter than Hingis. Maybe if he had said cuter I could go along
with that?
No, he relentlessly accused Sakari of "faking" his fanhood of Djokovic
among other things. Ice just made it up out of thin air.
jd is very drunk and still upset about my comments about him voting for his war-monger hero Joe Biden and now it turns out he really loves not just Hillary Clinton, but also Kim Klijsters as well whom he finds very very attractive! amazing taste!

I only recall the disagreements I had with Sakari, which were mainly
around his misguided idea that Clijsters was better than Henin and she
only lost because she 'didn't play her best'. It was almost as if he
was related to Kim in some way, why else would you be so adamant Kim was
better? That's pretty dumb. I don't trust anyone with that kind of
tennis judgment.

Hingis is way cuter & ho

Garwin doesn't reply to me cos I called him racist
It could be that your writing has become increasingly erratic and
incoherent in recent years. You belly laugh at the same dumb jokes
you've told daily for the last 3 weeks straight, each time as though it
was the first. Because of this whenever I read your posts I get the
distinct impression I'm watching some poor chav's slow-motion descent
into hardcore drugs and booze.
I'd probably feel sorry for you but then I remember on the rare occasion
you're actually clean or sober you're nothing more than a mean-spirited
little cunt. A nasty little shit whose main accomplishment in this

oooooo thanks jd, that's more like it! good to show us some of your true "caring" leftist self and the nice language you regularly use! dunno how much Alaskan whiskey must've drunk to finally post this but it good that you did in a way! jd you really should just admit you've always voted Democrat and are programmed that way and that's the real/only reason you voted for that war-monger Biden, then everyone would be happy! LOL

Grand slam titles : 64
Singles : 24
Doubles : 19
Mixed Doubles : 21
Calendar grand slams;
Singles : 1970
Mixed Doubles : 1963
Mixed Doubles : 1965
Career Grand Slams;
Singles : 3
Doubles : 2
Mixed Doubles : 4
She almost won calendar slams in these yrs (ie 3 slams won in the year);
Singles;
1962
1965
1969
1973
Doubles;
1973
Mixed Doubles;
1964
1969
So if she didn't choke so much at Wimbledon she'd have 5 calendar grand
slams in singles, 1 in doubles and 4 in mixed doubles.  10 calendar
grand slams!
Also;
All time women's record of 192 Singles titles     Stands alone
Open era record of 46 career grass court singles titles Stands alone
Open era career singles match winning percentage (all surfaces) 91.17%
(593–56)     Stands alone
Open era career singles match winning percentage (hard court) 91.73%
(111-10)     Stands alone
Open era career singles match winning percentage (grass court) 93.01%
(293-22)     Stands alone
Open era record of 21 singles titles won in one year     Stands alone
WTA Tour record of 18 singles titles won in one year     Stands alone
Pretty weird how she doesn't get the respect she deserves?
Her slam count is bloated winning 10 titles at AO, first four finals
being against Aussie player Jan Lehane...

You can see that the field at AO was really weak in early 1960s as
Lehane got four times in a row to AO final, while never getting to semis
at other slams.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Lehane#Grand_Slam_singles_tournament_timeline

Meanwhile, Court didn't win 10 titles in other slams...
