ICJ declares Israeli occupation unlawful, calls for settlements to be evacuated, and for Palestinian reparations

In a scathing Advisory Opinion sure to tighten the legal screws on
Israel and place its Western allies in a huge bind, the world’s
supreme judicial body declared today that Israel’s 57-year occupation
and settlement of the West Bank and East Jerusalem are unlawful, that
both must end, that settlements must be evacuated, and that
Palestinians — denied their inalienable right to self-determination –
must be compensated for their losses and allowed to return to their
lands.

“The sustained abuse by Israel of its position as an occupying Power,
through annexation and an assertion of permanent control over the
Occupied Palestinian Territory and continued frustration of the right
of the Palestinian people to self-determination, violates fundamental
principles of international law and renders Israel’s presence in the
Occupied Palestinian Territory unlawful,” Lebanese court President
Nawaf Salam told the packed court chambers at the Peace Palace in The
Hague.

And, Judge Nawaf said, reading from the ICJ’s 83-page Advisory
Opinion, the international community is obliged not to recognize as
legal the internationally wrongful acts Israel has carried out in the
course of its prolonged occupation, nor render aid and assistance in
furthering them.

All nine clauses of the Advisory Opinion’s operative statement were
passed by an overwhelming majority of the court’s 15 justices.

You don't get to chose what (or which?) part of legislation you'd obey.

International law is not a real law, there's no one to enforce it, it's all about voluntary agreements.

If you refuse something, and you can get away with it, fine.

But you must know others who can get away with their own stuff, will chose to that as well.

And then there's no international law anymore.

Which is our current world.

All true in my opinion and you've also illustrated an increasing trend,
which is multiple layers of maste...er..governmental leadership.

Here in Portland,Oregon in the US, where I live,  we've got five
*official* governmental polities: the city in which you reside, the
county, the regional entity called "Metro",  the state, and the federal
government with its many departmental layers. In many cases, especially
at the state level and below, their authority is stacked and nearly
congruent. This is to say that the city can tell you to do one thing
about your house, for example, Metro might add more things, the county
more, the state more, and in a few cases what one entity tells you is
contrary to what the others tell you and then they fight it out over
your miserable carcass, like wild dogs.

On top of that, some folks tithe to their churches and that, too, adds a
drain.

And this is that way mankind has always lived once they densely populate
a region. There's really no fighting, and mostly you can do two things:
at least recognize that this is how it's working and that you're
basically a small scale source of assets to them; and to try to either
get yourself into a position to be a part of this structure of
overlords, or at least gain their favor somewhat.

Like I once heard in a Japanese samurai film, when told that a band of
samurai were headed toward the village, the village elder said, "Act
dumb and hide the rice."

Don't forget the worst of them all, HOAs ("homeowners'
associations"). Or so I hear, I've never personally bought a
house bound by one.

Me, either.

But yes, the HOA fee is similar the the Mormon tithe, although maybe
Mormons have more say in the size of the levy.

Well, treaties are treaties. If you're a signatory you (should) enforce
what the ICJ says. I don't think Putinskaya has visited an ICJ signatory
since his warrant for arrest. I doubt he has the balls to tempt his luck
either. If he chose to pay a visit to UK, he would promptly be arrested.
He should also should he visit Finland. At least that's what civil
servants in the FM say. But we all know what happens in Finland when
push comes to shove. The telephone rings.
