Permalinknumbers of hate messages, shocking the organizer of the traditional
festival, Folkhälsan.
The tradition of Lucia, the bearer of light, is a Catholic tradition
dating back to the martyr Santa Lucia of Syracuse. Up North, the
tradition has a Swedish twist to it. It was whipped into the tsuhnas
during the Swedish rule over Finland.
There have been an exceptionally large number of messages on
Folkhälsan's website and social media channels compared to previous years.
"I am very sad that the celebration of light and humanity is being
overshadowed", HR and Development Manager Stina Heikkilä from Folkhälsan
tells HS on Sunday.
Heikkilä is responsible at Folkhälsan for the events of the Lucia
festival throughout Christmas and January.
For Finnish speakers, Daniela Owusu has been the target of such a huge
racist attack, according to Heikkilä, that Folkhälsan has decided to
protect her from excessive publicity for the time being.
Have there been dozens or hundreds of racist messages?
“We could talk about thousands”.
What is their content?
“They are aimed at Daniela. She has the wrong skin color. N-words,
W-words are repeated. They remind us where Daniela is from. You are
making us Muslims, they say”, Heikkilä says.
According to Heikkilä, racist messages came as soon as Owusu was crowned
in Helsinki Cathedral last Friday. It was reportedly quieter for a
while, but when Owusu gained visibility in the media due to her
position, she became a target again.
“This weekend, publicity has again awakened racists and neo-Nazis”.
Folkhälsan is Finland's largest Swedish-speaking organization that works
for health and quality of life. The Lucia maiden travels as a bearer of
hope in nursing homes and hospitals, where comfort is needed most.
A charity is organized in conjunction with the Lucia celebration. The
proceeds are directed to the needy.
Owusu, 20, was elected to be the Lucia maiden in a public vote. "More
positive messages, visibility, and praise have come from both Finnish
and Swedish speakers than in previous years," says Heikkilä.
