If it was even h2h that stays forever in history, so very important for Novak to finish ahead as this is likely their last ever match. Nadal played his best in a while, especially the 2nd set comeback - but Novak was super impressive. Amazing how he can just turn it on when he wants it badly. I knew he'd get the ace on mp.
Yes you seem to be spot on this one.
Both of them wanted this badly.
I had totally different view. I assumed the story was over. Nadal is done winning anything, Djokovic is done winning slams, I assumed both would be emotional and respectful of each other after essentially their last match ever.
I honestly expected a huge hug, a long hug.
All of these goat bargaining chips mean a lot when you're comparing
greats, especially when they played alongside each other. If this match
didn't impact the h2h they would have behaved as you said, warm hug etc
as it didn't change much. This is probably the greatest rivalry in
tennis, 2 of the big 3 playing 60 times across all slam finals, surfaces
etc. The top 2 slam winners of all time. The h2h is a big deal. You
bet Novak wants to stay ahead and Rafa wanted it to at least be even and
not behind Novak in yet another category. You could see the tension
leaving Novak's body after the win, it was a huge deal for him and gave
him a lot of satisfaction. He'll probably remember this match more than
some of his routine slam wins.
